26 Guildhall Walk,
A warm welcome from the Brewhouse & Kitchen team here at Portsmouth
The first thing that you notice when you walk through the doors of this 100 year old, Tudor styled building is the gleaming copper vats, perched high on their pedestals. This is where the brewing is done – on site, in view, so that you can feel a part of this indigenous brewing experience. The fact that this was once the footprint of the ‘locally famed’ Brickwood Brewery, and latterly colloquially known as ‘The Mucky Duck’ it just seems right that it has returned to its roots and is once again producing some amazing brews.
Recently refurbished, the whole place is gleaming yet still cosy and inviting. Choose your environment from sumptuous sofas for casual dining and drinking, large tables for great get-togethers to intimate tables for two and all we ask is that you relax and let our friendly staff look after you.
As its name would suggest, this beer might surprise you. It’s so good that grown men have been known to demonstrate domestic prowess in the home, just to nip out for a pint (or two…) of this beautiful, hoppy, India Pale Ale
You can almost hear his footsteps getting louder and louder as he approaches the White Swan or in those days, was referred to as ‘The Mucky Duck’ as he rounds up his men who, once they have sobered up are responsible for sailing him and his Royal ship round the world — it took four years! Well thank goodness you won’t have to wait 4 years for your next pint of Porter!
Kolsch Style Ale
Well, we could just come out and mention it… but will we get away with it? Let us give you a clue… they liked wearing hard metal hats, flying in Messerschmitts and dropping an unnecessary amount of inflammable material over our beautiful buildings. Luckily we Brits are quite good at building ourselves back up — which is exactly what we had to do to our lovely neoclassical Guildhall after it was bombed to bits during World War II by our ‘Kolsch’ — loving neighbours! Savour a pint or two of our Kolsch — it’ll get you all fired up and patriotic!
Portsmouth is the UK’s only island city, with Portsea Island accounting for 62% of the city’s land mass. Portsmouth is the most densely populated area in the UK outside of London, with an estimated population of 207,300 residing within 15.5 square miles
We love our Mucky Duck, the alter ego of the White Swan, less rounded and perfect, a bit dirty, a bit edgy and a bit more fun! As the White Swan’s less virginal (to say the least) sister, it’s what we really want, but are just too afraid to come right out and say so… but now you can (and we won’t judge. Enjoy a pint (or two or three…) of Mucky Duck… the good times are just about to start rollin’…
Smooth, strong, adored by everyone, the other ‘great blonde’ with a fabulous body, home grown here in Portsmouth. This world-class blonde beer is a fitting tribute to our very own world-class swimming talent Katy Sexton MBE.
This ale stands up to the strongest critics, which is why we have had so much fun in naming it after Sir John Harvey Jones AKA ‘Troubleshooter’, presenter of the BBC’s BAFTA award-winning series of the 90’s ‘Troubleshooter’. Not known for mincing his words was John, and at one point was highly critical of Brickwood Brewery’s most popular ale, but we don’t mince our words either, this ale is bloody brilliant, eat your heart out John!
We have been inextricably linked to the theatre in Portsmouth since 1854 when the then licensee of the ‘White Swan’, an ex travelling circus owner, decided to lease the hall next door and turn it into a theatre to which the middle classes would come to be entertained….. Fast forward to modern day and the theatre continues to entertain and with its splendid complete refurbishment and part re-build carried out from 2013 – 2015, it is now restored to its former glory – a project of which even Matcham (the theatre’s original architect) would be proud!
